Associate Professor Luis M. Gonzalez teaches Spanish film and Spanish literature. A native of Spain, he received his doctorate from the Universidad de Alcalá de Henares (2002) and Georgetown University (2004). In his research, he explores the relationship between culture and ideology in contemporary Spain.

He has published two books on Spanish theater: La escena madrileña durante la II República (1931-1939) (Universidad de Alcalá de Henares, 1996) y El teatro español durante la II República y la crítica de su tiempo (1931-1936) (Fundación Universitaria Española, 2007). He is also co-editor of the book  Motivos y estrategias. Estudios en honor de Ángel Berenguer (Instituto Politécnico de Leiria, Universidad de Granada, 2009).

Gonzalez's last book, Fascismo, kitsch y cine histórico en España (1939-1953) (Universidad de Castilla-La Mancha, 2009), analyzes a series of historical films produced in the first years of the Franco dictatorship. The book was well received by academic journals.

In a review published in the prestigious Bulletin of Hispanic Studies, Fernando Bonaddio states that the book “represents a valuable addition to the growing body of work focusing on the cinema of the early Franco Period." In addition, in a review published in the influential Revista Canadiense de Estudios Hispánicos, Jorge Marí states that “Gonzalez´s study is rigorous, perceptive and well-documented." Furthermore, he points out that "his contribution is very significant, not only because of the questions he addresses but also because of the wit and rigor with which he answers many of them." Since 2011 he is the editor of the Cultural Studies Journal Teatro. Revista de Estudios Culturales.

Recently he wrote the introduction for a new edition of Valle Inclan’s Comedias Bárbaras, published by the prestigious Spanish publisher Castalia.

He is currently working on a new book on tragedy and film in Spain.
